So you have a great Hurst shifter but it isn't performing like it pre-owned to.... A common problem with VW Hurst or EMPI style shifters is that the rivets holding the nylon blocks together come loose. When they get loose, the nylon blocks eventually break. If you just repair it with screws, the nylon blocks deform and it won't clamp down tight. With this steel reinforcement plate you can tighten the screws as much as you want and it won't damage the nylon blocks. If your nylon blocks are broken, as shown in the photos, the plate holds them so securely that you can reuse the broken parts and get your broken shifter working again. It can also help prevent your nylon blocks from breaking. Cheap insurance. Now this plate is Patent Pending ! T he currently available EMPI shifters are Hurst copies. These parts will interchange, so this part fits Hurst, EMPI and Bugpack. The holes in the plate are designed for M5 screws; #10-32 screws work too. Use nyloc nuts to prevent loosening. The length will vary depending on the thickness of your shifter's 2 plates. If they are both the same part, use M5x20 screws (#10-32 x ¾"). If the top plate is a lot thicker than the bottom, use M5x25 screws (#10-32 x 1") This plate will also work with the old Toyota Hurst shifter of similar design. Answer: The problem with this Hurst shifter is that the rivets loosen up with only moderate use. This makes for a sloppy shifter. You should check the fit of the main pivot ball within the 2 nylon blocks. If there's any play, by installing this plate, you can reduce some of this play for tighter shifts. Screws and nylon locknuts allow you to clamp the nylon blocks tighter than the original rivets. I recommend installing the reinforcement plate now so that it prevents the nylon block from breaking.
